Metro - Atlantic City golf: Tips for a top-notch trip

Atlantic City has flown under the radar as a golf destination for years, with heavyweights such as Myrtle Beach and Ocean City gobbling up much of the attention.

But with golf suitable for every budget and level of playing ability, Atlantic City's 25 regional courses (13 of which are less than a 20-minute drive) offer variety and a fully customizable trip. Having lived within driving distance of the casino destination all my life, I've had the chance to play quite a few of the gems in this part of the state.

First, with 12 casino hotels (including Revel, which will open in March, 2012), and many off-site options, Atlantic City has the nightlife and non-golf activities that so many other locations are lacking. Gambling, dining, drinking: What more can you ask for after a day on the links?

Second is the quality of golf. For a 3-4 day trip, you'll run out of days long before you run out of good options. While I haven't played them all, here's a brief recap of some of the options. If there's a place not listed here, it's not a slight, it just means I haven't played there or heard enough from reliable sources to include it in this list.

So without further adieu, The Subpar Golf Blog's Atlantic City Must-Play List:

• Atlantic City Country Club: Without a doubt, one of the best courses in the state of New Jersey, public or private. ACCC, built in 1897 is a fantastic example of classic golf architecture. ACCC should be on any list of America's greatest seaside golf course.

• Twisted Dune: It's been a few years since playing this gem, but it continues to rack up high praise. Dramatic holes leave a lasting impression, yet this design is imminently playable.

Atlantic City World Amateur Open Golf Tournament
June 5 – 9, 2011

(Atlantic City, NJ) January 12, 2011 – Atlantic City is trading in their beach towels for tee times and replacing rolling chairs with golf carts for the inaugural Atlantic City World Amateur Open. The city that is “Always Turned On” is inviting amateur golfers to test their skills on some of the most prestigious golf courses in the region June 5 through 9, 2011.

The first of its kind in the region, the Atlantic City World Amateur Open is available to any amateur golfer with an established USGA GHIN handicap. The event will encompass three days of golf at a different course each day, a championship round and a party each night at a different casino hotel. The tournament will be hosted by the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association (acgolfvacations.com) which is a collection of leading golf courses in Southern New Jersey and has been contributing to the tourism market for the past 15 years. Each day the rounds of golf will be played on 7 different golf courses. The championship round and awards ceremony will take place on June 9 at the historical Seaview, A Dolce Resort. Borgata Casino Hotel and Spa will host a kick-off event on Sunday, June 5 and additional cocktail receptions will be held at The Pool at Harrah’s on Monday, June 6 and at Resorts Casino Hotel on Tuesday, June 7.

Golfers will be broken out into age groups (Men – 49 years and under, Senior Men – 50 to 59 years, Mid Senior Men – 60 to 69 years, Super Senior Men – 70 years and older, Women – 49 years and under and Senior Women – 50 years and older) and assigned to flights of 96 players in a shotgun format. Prizes will be awarded for the top individuals in each flight, and a fourth round championship playoff will take place for all flight winners and ties.

It took several new courses and the worst economy in nearly 100 years to produce a downturn club officials estimate between five and 15 percent. With the average course fielding around 25,000 rounds per year, most facilities seek to add perhaps 75 rounds per week in a nine-month season. That could be covered with two or three additional foursomes each day.

Nationally, it's worse. Jack Nicklaus laid off 60 of his 100 employees in the design division, according to Stephen Kay, the area's pre-eminent golf architect. Other areas are not buoyed by a multi-billion dollar casino industry and a golf association that spends $1 million annually, as the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association, does to entice out-of-state players.

"Golf has staying power that other sports and other industries don't have," Bittner said. "Look at the businesses that close in every other industry. Golf is going down a bit for the first time ever. People love to play golf. It's part of a social environment for people. The older they get, the more they are going to play.

"As soon as the economy comes back a bit, and we're already seeing it to some degree, people are going to go back to the courses. Right now you might have a guy in another state who didn't come out here last year because he was afraid of losing his job, and he agreed with his wife that they wouldn't go away. Now he figures he's been a good boy, it's time to have some fun. The flip side of all of this is, how long are people going to sit back and not spend money? They want to."

Bittner has a unique perspective on the industry. He sees the marketing end, with the nine GACGA courses marketing to Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New York. A lot of kids in my neighborhood learned to compete by playing T-ball or floor hockey. For me, it was moving my car token around the Monopoly board. My dad took remarkable glee in separating me from my imaginary properties and pretend cash. Knocking him out of the game was way better than getting a game-winning hit in T-ball -- and almost as rare.

So it was with a bit of nostalgia that I glided off the Atlantic City Expressway onto Atlantic Avenue -- one of the yellows, with Marvin Gardens and Ventnor -- in a silver Mercedes E350 sedan. Sure, it wasn't mine, but it beat getting $200 in funny money for passing Go with my tin race car.

Atlantic City might have peaked in the Roaring '20s, when it inspired the famous Parker Brothers board game, but the faded resort town still has loads of gritty charm, fantastic food and historic public golf. And it's a three-hour drive -- and a world away -- from Manhattan on even a nasty traffic day.

Seaview Golf Resort sits just outside Atlantic City proper, on a pastoral web of ocean inlets and marshes. Hugh Wilson laid out the original Bay Course in 1914 (Donald Ross designed the bunkers) as a wind-swept, links-style private club, and the boardwalk hotels and casinos slowly filled the skyline across Reeds Bay. The William Flynn-Howard C. Toomey Pines Course was added after World War I, and a combination of holes from the two courses was used for the 1942 PGA Championship, won by Sam Snead.

In more recent times, the property transitioned from private club to resort, and the LPGA Tour has played the ShopRite Classic on the Bay Course on and off for 21 years. It's back for 2010 (June 18-20), and the course is ready. A seven-figure resort-wide upgrade in 2006 brought things into the 21st century, but Wilson's gem is still a blast from the past. It's 6,247 yards stretched to the tips, but the wind and the penalty for missing makes even middle-iron approaches dangerous. Although the Pines doesn't get the attention of its seaside sister, it should. Longer, narrower and tougher, it has ball-stealing primary rough and is often in better shape than the salt-whipped Bay.

Dolce Hotels took over the Seaview Resort last year, but the rooms are still Marriott-like and cost $110 or so. For a more luxurious experience, go downtown to the Borgata -- the only Atlantic City property that matches Las Vegas' best, amenity for amenity. Standard rooms range from $99 to $409, and you'll be just down the hall from a world-class poker room and a steakhouse run by Food Network impresario Bobby Flay.

The Jersey Shore has an amazing amount of gorgeous courses to choose from.
Whether you call it “fairway fever” or something similar, it is probable area golfers have never looked forward to getting back into the swing of things more than this spring. With that hellacious winter and not a whole lot of encouraging news where their company 401(k)s are concerned, the sound of a Maxfli sailing off the sweet spot of a seven iron is going to be music to golfers’ ears. Hell, even a profanity-laced tirade when said Maxfli gets sliced into a pond might be music to their ears after this past winter. “The thing about February was, we had so much snow that none of the courses in the area were even open, but we had a great March, April proved to be pretty good, and we’re really excited about the season overall,” says Brian Hoey, chairman of the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association (GACGA). “People just want to be outside in the nice weather, and there’s a really optimistic feeling going around.

“When we go to the golf-and-travel shows and trade shows, we always ask the customers if they plan to play more, less or about the same golf this year than last, and so far the response has almost universally been more or at least the same. So the outlook is very bright. To me that shows that despite the bad economy and despite the bad weather, people are still anxious to get out and play.”

The ShopRite LPGA Classic Returns to Atlantic City

The ShopRite LPGA Classic will return to southern New Jersey after a three-year absence. The event is scheduled for June 14th - 20th, 2010, at Seaview Resort's historic Bay Course in Galloway Township. The 54-hole official event will offer a $1.5M purse and will be televised on the Golf Channel.

The ShopRite Classic and the LPGA have a five-year contract, but each side could opt out during that stretch, said Tim Erensen of Atlantic City Golf, LLC, and the tournament's executive director. The tournament will compete against the U.S. Men’s Open at Pebble Beach, Calif., in 2010. However, the ShopRite Classic will move up to the weekend after Memorial Day beginning in 2011.

“The event did not leave because it wasn’t successful,” Erensen said. “We hope to have as long and as successful a run as the previous (management) group.” Erensen, 36, has been involved with the LPGA and professional golf since the mid-1990s. He was an executive with Octagon Worldwide Inc., a sports management company that ran several LPGA events, including the Sybase Classic presented by ShopRite, which was held in May at Upper Montclair Country Club the last two years. Karen Meleta, spokesperson for ShopRite, said Wakefern jumped at the chance to have the tournament back in the Atlantic City-area. “We never wanted to leave Atlantic City,” she said. “Circumstances made that happen. When were presented with an opportunity to return, we couldn’t resist. We’re coming back home.”

Originally known as the Atlantic City Classic, the tournament began in 1986 and was played at several courses near Atlantic City with the first two and last nine years played at Seaview. The tournament was officially changed to the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 1992 when Wakefern Food Corporation took over as title sponsor. The event was cancelled in 2007 when the LPGA decided to host a different event on the date traditionally reserved for the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Organizers of the local event and the LPGA could not come up with another date that worked for both.

The event was a popular spectator event with local golfers, an economic boon to the area and a huge source of donations for local charities. Since the 1980s, ShopRite has donated more than $22 million to charities by sponsoring LPGA events.

Fall golfing in Atlantic City: nearby for many, plenty of choices.

Many Spirit Airline flights from Atlantic City take golfers to the courses of Myrtle Beach and Fort Myers. Although the Atlantic City area does not feature nearly the number of courses as do those two areas, AC is no slouch when it comes to hosting public players and September through October is a great time to test the Atantic City courses.

In addition to offering extras for after your golf round, the Atlantic City area is blessed with excellent Autumn weather, thanks to the moderating effect of the ocean.

Following is a run-down of public courses within about 20 minutes of the casinos.

The Links at Brigantine Beach is on the island just north of Atlantic City---just drive between Trump Marina and Harrah's and head over the bridge. Brigantine is a Scottish links design, surrounded by marsh, that has undergone major upgrades in recent years. The clubhouse facility is modest but adequate. http://www.brigantinegolf.com/

Twisted Dune, in spite of its name, is a few miles inland from Atlantic City. It is laid out through rolling sand dunes and is almost devoid of trees. Estimating the wind is cited as one of the challenges to this interesting course. Harbor Pines, nestled in an upscale managed housing community just a few long drives away from Twisted Dune, boasts of a 4-Star rating by Golf Digest and accolades by Golf Magazine and Golf for Women. Troon Golf manages the golf facilities: the Bay Course, former host to the ShopRite LPGA Classic and designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. Rerouted in April 2006 with thick rough and pot bunkers around the greens, "this now-famous course continues to challenge both amateur and professional golfers alike."

New Direct Flights to Atlantic City!

AirTran Airways is now offering daily nonstop flights from Atlantic City International Airport in Atlantic City, N.J., to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Ga. Management Change at Seaview Resort and Spa

Dolce Hotels and Resorts today announced it has been awarded the management contract for Seaview Resort and Spa, a 297-room historic hotel, conference center and golf resort near Atlantic City that has been managed by Marriott International since 1984. Troon Golf has been retained to manage Seaview's two 18-hole championship golf courses, the links-style Bay Course, designed by Hugh Wilson and Donald Ross, and the 80-year-old Pines Course, designed by Howard Toomey and William Flynn.

The 300-acre Seaview complex in Galloway, N.J. -- one of 31 upscale and luxury full-service hotels and resorts owned by LaSalle Hotel Properties, a publicly traded real estate investment trust based in Bethesda, Md. -- will transition from Marriott management on May 8.
Steven A. Rudnitsky, Dolce president and chief executive officer, said the addition of Seaview will "round out the Dolce portfolio with our first golf and incentive meetings destination in the Eastern United States." Dolce immediately will begin implementing programs to drive revenue and increase profitability by integrating Seaview's sales efforts with Dolce's infrastructure of 40 sales representatives in the Northeast.

Rudnitsky said Troon Golf will add its branded golf experience to Seaview's courses and offer Troon Rewards, "the best loyalty program in golf," for Seaview's golfing guests. "Seaview always had two courses rich in history, and now it will have a great golf operator," he said. "Troon will reawaken Seaview golf and help us promote the facility as a premier golf destination." Atlantic City Hosts it's First National Golf Conference

The International Network of Golf (ING) annual Spring Conference was held in Atlantic City May 27th – 31st 2008. This was the first national golf conference ever to be held in Atlantic City. There was 165 attendees from across the world that represented golf media, golf apparel manufactures, golf club manufacturers, and golf travel executives. Attendees included representatives from Golf Digest, Golf Week, Nike, Adidas, ESPN Radio and many others from national and international companies. The three day conference was held at The Sheraton Atlantic City and rounds of golf were played at Seaview Resort and Spa, a Marriott Resort, Atlantic City Country Club, and Blue Heron Pines Golf Club. The executive committee commented to all the attendees during the final reception that Atlantic City was the best host of their conference in the entire 18 years of existence. The MC for the conference was Bobby Lewis from the Golf Channel.
