Yes, it's already that time of year. On this foggy and overcast morning in Augusta, Georgia, three legendary golfers, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus set off the 77th Masters Tournament with a signatory tee shot.
The tradition of these honorary starters has been going on for years, used to usher the first of four major golf tournaments played each year. While the Augusta National Golf Club course is much more hilly than the flat courses throughout New Jersey, many PGA Tour Professionals have been known to play at the Atlantic City Country Club. In fact, before his rise to stardom, Arnold Palmer used to play at the Atlantic City Country Club while he was stationed with the Coast Guard in Cape May.
Arnold Palmer has since been the champion of four Masters Tournaments, the same as Tiger Woods. So, while we can't promise that a Sunday jaunt through the Atlantic City Country Club will guarantee you a future in the Masters Tournament, we can say that it played an important role in shaping the career of one of the greatest golfers of all time.
With that said, while the three honorary starters have since retired from a career in professional golf, we can look forward to an exciting display of contemporary golfers. A dogfight between champions Tiger Woods and Phily Mickelson, as well as professional golfer Rory Mcllory is an exciting possibility.
To make things more interesting, this 2013 Masters Tournament includes Guan Tianlang, who at age 14 is the youngest participant in the history of the Masters. He will be paired with fellow teen phenom Matteo Manassero, and 61 year old Ben Crewnshaw.
